The theme of the workshop was "Stage lighting – Architectural lighting". Another term was also often mentioned during the work-shop, one that can be seen as being somewhere between the two extremes: "event lighting". It was interesting to see the consequences of the discussions that went on regarding the differences between stage lighting and architectural lighting and the crossover areas in the different working groups' design concepts. It is high time that a clear definition was made of what lighting design is. Too many people regard stage lighting and architectural lighting as compatible and believe that lighting techniques and concepts can be adopted by one or the other without modification.
Within the framework of the workshop at Bodenburg Castle near Hildesheim/D crossover areas and borders between the related design tasks were discussed in theory, experienced first-hand in a series of practical experiments, and finally tested on existing objects and structures. The main question that was asked was: when is it valid to apply theatrical effects in architectural situations? The workshop participants were faced with the task of illuminating specific interior and exterior spaces and locations at the Castle and presenting the results to an interested public. The fact that their work was to be a public presentation encouraged the different groups to develop varied lighting concepts. The lighting installations were intended to demonstrate how fascinating, pleasing and effective purposefully designed lighting can be.
